Visitors bureau offers carbon calculator

The Denver Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau said Tuesday it will tweak its website to offer a carbon calculator and offset program.

The website, at denver.org, will allow visitors to determine how large a carbon footprint they would create by visiting Denver. The feature comes as the city is preparing to host the Democratic National Convention, which is hoping to make history as the “greenest” –— most environmentally friendly — ever.

A carbon footprint measures the impact that human activities such as travel have on the environment, in terms of the amount of greenhouse gases produced. The measurement is in units of carbon dioxide.

Richard Scharf, president and CEO of the visitors bureau, cited a recent study of meeting planners in which a third said their delegates only want to meet in “green” destinations and a fourth say that all things being equal, they want to go to the greenest city http://payday-z.com.

In addition to measuring a carbon footprint, the website gives visitors the option of buying carbon offsets to support programs in Colorado to reduce greenhouse gases.
